We all wish we could wake up with our creative juices ready to run rampant. But really, most of us wake up feeling a bit too tired, a bit too flat, and wishing we could stay in bed for a few more hours.
Choosing — and sticking to — a few morning rituals can make all the difference in how your day pans out. Instead of carrying your early morning grogginess with you as you move about your life, you can develop ways to shake it off first thing in the morning.
Then, rather than setting about your work because you have to, you can start the day with sparks of inspiration flashing through your mind.
We’re all different, and the creativity-boosting morning rituals that work for one person might not be exactly right for someone else. But all of these suggestions are adaptable. Use them as a starting point, try them out, and then tweak them until they leave you feeling energised, positive, and excited about the creative potential of your day.
Write Your Morning Pages. Have you read Julie Cameron’s book, The Artist’s Way? One of her suggestions for living a more creative life is to start every day with morning pages. After you wake up, sit down and write three pages of stream-of-consciousness, by hand. Every day. You don’t need to worry about what comes out; just let the words come and then put them aside and go on with your day.
Keep A Dream Journal. If you wake up with dream memories jumbled up in your head, start your day by writing them down. It’ll make you feel clearer and calmer, and you might even find creative ideas amidst the muddle of your dreams.
Get Your Heart Racing. A short period of exercise first thing in the morning shakes off all of the impressions left on you by the previous day, and makes you feel strong, fresh and energised. Try High Intensity Interval Training — it requires no equipment and can be done anywhere. And just 20 minutes will make you feel like you’ve really worked out.
Go Outside. This is especially important if you don’t have to ‘go out’ to work. If you work at home, get up and leave the house first thing in the morning. If you can get away from the roads and into nature, even better. But a 20 minute walk, even if you do stick to the concrete jungle, will give you a variety of sights, smells and sounds to fan your creative fire.
Meditate With Affirmations. Come up with a simple, personal mantra that speaks to who you want to be or the work you want to create. For example, it could be I am becoming calm and inspired or I have the tools I need; I trust myself. Take time to settle on a mantra that makes you feel confident, and then spend 5 minutes each morning repeating it to yourself with concentration and close eyes. You could speak it out loud, or silently in your head.
Try one or two of these rituals each morning for the next week. After trying each one, think about what you did and didn’t like about it, and how it made you feel.
Then you can begin to shape your personal morning routine, complete with rituals that make you feel awake, alert, and alive with creative energy.
