In Australia, around 14% of the population will suffer from a diagnosed anxiety disorder every year. Many more people deal with anxiety without going to a medical professional for help; either because they don’t think their anxiety is ‘bad enough’; because they don’t realise that they are struggling with anxiety; or because they choose to avoid bringing their feelings into a clinical setting.
Do you struggle with anxiety? It can be hard to tell the difference between healthy nerves and the unavoidable worries of every day life, and anxiety that may be damaging for your long term health.
But in general, if you find that you are spending more time worrying than not worrying, it’s a good idea to pay attention to your anxious mind and start focusing on self-care techniques that will help you calm down.
Essential oils can be incredibly helpful if you’re feeling anxious. Distilled from plants and other natural sources, these oils capture healing properties in concentrated form — and they come in lovely little bottles that you can carry with you wherever you go.
There are a number of ways that you can use essential oils — from inhaling the aroma to applying them directly to your skin; and you can even cook with them.
Try these doTERRA essential oils to feel calm, confident, and prepared for anything.
You’ve probably heard of the calming effects of lavender — it’s often used as a sleep aid, as it helps to soothe nervous tension and prepare you for peaceful rest. Extracted from the flowers of the lavender plant, lavender has a direct impact on the autonomic nervous system. Simply open the bottle and take a deep breath in through the nose to experience the benefits straight away. You can also rub the oil gently onto your feet or temples to cultivate calm. Dilute with a carrier oil to start with.
This oil is often used as an antidepressant. It boosts your immune health and blood flow, and is known to be a highly effective mood lifter. It comes from the flower petals of the Ylang ylang tree; it has a sweet floral scent which will be familiar to you if you’ve used Chanel No. 5! It’s a beautiful oil to scent your home with, to contribute to a calm and happy space. And it can also be mixed with a carrier oil — like Coconut Oil — and then used on your skin during a relaxing massage.
Frankincense is sometimes called the King of Essential Oils — and with good reason. Its aroma encourages feelings of contentment, peace and wholeness. It’s the perfect oil to use alongside meditation practices that focus on gratitude and present-moment awareness — and this kind of meditation is also extremely useful for moving through periods of anxiety. It works wonderfully when diffused in an oil burner or steam diffuser in your home.
